When To Tell Your Curls Need A Trim
Posted on August 14 2019
As naturals, there is nothing better than seeing health over length. To achieve healthy hair, regular trims are essential.
As you all know, the ends are the oldest part of your hair, so it is important to look after them. The real question is, when should you trim your ends? The answer is, there is no real answer other than 'it depends'. This could be every season or every 4-6 weeks. Everyones hair journey is different, therefore the time we decided to trim our curls will be different.
There are 3 main signs to look out for when figuring out when you are in need of a trim.
Fairy Knots / Single Strand Knots
This has to be one of the most common things we see during our natural hair journies. Naturally curly hair is more prone to tangles and the ends tend to curl up on themselves causing knots. Fairy knots or single strand knots are one or two little knots at the end of your hair strands. This sometimes happens when there are split ends that travel up the hair shaft. Protecting your hair with a satin scarf or bonnet can help reduce split ends.
Uniqurl tip: Once hair is trimmed, why not deep condition with a protein conditioner. It will help add strength back to your freshly trimmed ends.
When your hair is dry, it can lead to it becoming brittle. This usually happens towards the end of your hair. If you notice your hair, specifically the ends are extremely frizzy, then it also time for a trim. This is the same for color treated curls. Color treated hair tends to be drier so healthy hair maintenance is key. Following up with a moisturizer and oil will help maintain and seal in moisture to your ends and keep your strands smooth and hydrated.
Uniqurl tip: Tucking your ends away in a protective style can help protect your ends until your next trim.
Sparse Ends or Less Definition
Imagine detangling your hair and seeing thickness, you get to the ends and they are looking a little thin where you can see gaps in between your ends. This shows you definitely need a trim girl. You may also notice your ends are a little thin when styling your hair. Twist and braid outs become lifeless at the ends giving your style a lifeless look. If your hair is fine, then regular trimming is necessary. We want to keep those ends looking full.
Uniqurl tip: It is best to trim on stretched and sectioned hair. You want to evenly see what ends need to go.
Remember, in order for your hair to grow and retain length, you need to look after your curls. Health over length always!
