How To Work Out With Natural Hair

Having natural hair doesn't mean you can't work out. As naturals, we spend so much time, effort and money on our kinks, coils and curls, and the last thing you want to do is sweat while you've just unraveled the perfect twist out. Not to mention, planning wash days and hairstyles in between.
So we're sharing with you a few tips and tricks you can do to take care of your natural hair whilst working out.

Put Your Hair Up

Having your curls up and out of the way is the most practical solution while working out. Ponytails, buns and pineapples, are all great styles to help keep your hair away from your face and neck. These are the places you are most likely to sweat. Why not try a few more low manipulations styles like braids, cornrows and twists. You don't have to do your hair everyday, and it's automatically up and out of the way. A win win right!?

Refresh Your Hair and Scalp

Using a co-wash, essential oils or doing an ACV (apple cider vinegar) rinse, will help to cleanse your hair in-between workouts. Many naturals who work out usually shampoo once a week and co-wash during the week. Using a moisturizer or leave-in conditioner every day will help prevent dryness and breakage. Sweat does tend to dry your hair out, so using a moisturizing non stripping shampoo like our AloeMint Supreme Moisture Cleansing Shampoo will cleanse your hair without stripping any moisture.

Using a sulphate shampoo once a month will really cleanse your hair from dirt and give your curls a fresh start.

Deep Condition

Whether it's at the end of every week, two weeks or sulphate wash days, deep conditioning will help bring back any moisture lost from shampooing or add strength to your hair. Creating a deep conditioning routine will not only help revive your curls, but stimulate your scalp, recover your curly cuticles, and replenish your hair with moisture to protect it from damage, breakage and sweat.

Don't be afraid

Simply create a wash day routine where you are able to add in your gym sessions too. Planning ahead will help make wash days easier and you won't have to choose between your hair and your health. A good routine will keep your hair moisturized and you won’t need to hold yourself back from a good workout.

I work out early mornings at 5:00 am. Workout consists of a 30 minute walk and a 20 minute gym workout. During this time my hair is in twists and in a hair wrap. My wash day is on Saturdays and always includes shampoo, a deep conditioner and a leave in.
